What is coaching? Is it different from counseling or consulting?
I believe in setting clear expectations. I want you to understand what I do to help my clients. The word “help” can take different forms – counseling, consulting, and coaching are three of them. While similar and sometimes involving overlap, these three disciplines are distinct and often involve different approaches.
As a Christian, I may often sound like a counselor because I have some theological and counseling training, and because the Word of God is my foundational paradigm for who we are, how we were designed, and how we are to operate as men and as husbands. It is also my source for all objective truth.
As a thirteen-year military analyst, I may often sound like a consultant because I have been trained to research, investigate, and understand systems, situations, and scenarios, and determine possible courses of action given the available information. My experience in analysis informs and assists in my approach.
But I am a coach.
Counseling often explores and addresses past experiences and trauma, delves into either psychological theories or deep theological and pastoral work, and pursues healing, repentance, and change.
Consulting typically analyzes professional system and process problems, brings niche expertise to the table, and seeks to provide correctives and solutions.
Coaching focuses on personal growth, helps identify and remove obstacles or limitations, and seeks to produce individual transformation.
I am a coach. I help people get “unstuck”. I am here to help you identify lies that handicap your efforts, apply correctives, and streamline your application. I am here to provide you with tools that will help you transform into a competent leader with a well-ordered life, a deep understanding of the environment God placed you in, and a well-tuned ability to make wise decisions that bless your family and glorify God.
